ACA Lecture Series

Topic: Early Freethought in Texas - The Immigration and Settlement of the "Deutsche Freidenkers" and the Struggle to Preserve Their Sto About the speaker A number of German Freethinkers, also called "48ers", began settling in the Guadalupe River valley in the middle of the 19th century. I will talk about what made them unique and different from the "Adelsverein" Germans who were settling in New Braunsfel and Fredericksburg at roughly the same time. Indeed, 48ers who settled in Wisconsin, Missouri and Texas were remarkable for their level of education, their liberal ideals, and a distinct irreligiousness.
I also want to tell you about a modern effort to recognize the Deutsche Freidenkers that resulted in a bitter, protracted dispute between Freethinking folks and some of the townspeople of Comfort over what the memorial plaque should say. And I need to confess to you that this war of words waged in the local and national print media was almost entirely my fault. So please come hear the story (and my confession).
Don Rhoades is an ACA Board member.
