Community Service

While the ACA is primarily an educational organization, we do have a few community service events including the blood drive, adopt-a-street program, and canned food drive. Of course, many of our members peform a wide variety of charity work outside the ACA.

Upcoming community service events from our calendar:

  • Blood Drive on August 7, 2010 at 10:00 am
  • Adopt-a-street Clean Up on August 21, 2010 at 11:00 am
  • Adopt-a-street Clean Up on September 18, 2010 at 11:00 am

Blood Drive

About every eight weeks, the ACA has a blood drive at The Blood & Tissue Center of Central Texas on 4300 North Lamar Boulevard [Map]. Each drive is on a Saturday at 10am. See our calendar for a complete list of scheduled donation times.

If you are interesting in participating see their FAQ and make sure you are eligible to donate. Feel free to drop by for moral support even if you aren't eligible.

Keep Austin Beautiful

The ACA is proud to participate in the Keep Austin Beautiful Adopt-A-Street program. The program allows organizations to contribute to the community by keeping litter down on Austin streets in exchange for a KAB sign, bearing the organization's name. We currently have two locations. In North Austin, our sign proclaims a bit of Burnet road (between West Anderson Lane and Ohlen Road) for the Atheist Community of Austin. The new South Austin location is South Lamar between Barton Skyway and Panther Trail. The city has yet to put up the sign.

We generally meet on the 3rd Saturday of the month at 11am for a group outing to pick up trash and help the greater community. See our calendar for specific dates and times. Starting in 2009, we will alternate locations. On pick-up days, volunteers should meet at the meeting location with hats, gloves, and safety vests (if you got one at a previous clean up). Bags will be provided. The effort lasts about an hour and the group goes out for a meal afterwards.

  • North (odd numbered months): Jack-in-the-Box on the Northeast corner of Burnet and Anderson [Map].
  • South (even numbered months): Old Alligator Grill, 3003 S Lamar Blvd. [Map].

Check out photos from our 2007 pick-up scrapbook page or our 2009 "Clean Sweep" cleanup event.

Former board Member Joe Zamecki originally set up our participation in early 2007. Shelley Roberts is now coordinating the monthly effort, should you need to contact her about it.

Canned Food Drive

The ACA is collecting canned food and other non-perishables for the Capitol Area Food Bank at ACA meetings and events. Clothing donations will also be accepted. Members can bring these items to ACA events and give them to any ACA board member. Contact Chuck Clark or Lisa Mais for further information.
